Surgical Sperm Retrieval is a minor surgical procedure used to obtain sperm directly from the testes or epididymis. This enables men with azoopsermia to undergo fertility treatment using their own sperm.
Depending on the reason for absence of sperm, at our center we advise different surgical procedures for SSR (PESA, TESA or TESE), which will be performed by an andrologist under appropriate anaesthesia.
• PESA – Aspiration through skin
• TESA – Aspiration through testicular tissue
• TESE - Sperm extraction from testicular biopsy sample
SSR is performed before the IVF treatment cycle. The suitable sperm retrieved by SSR are frozen and stored for use in future IVF treatments. Couples undergoing SSR are always provided ICSI treatment to attain a better chance of fertilization.
